Yeah we are headed into the abyss. I've supported Democrats, Equality, Labor and the environment for 40 years. We as a nation have screwed it up every time. Reagan over Carter. Clinton. Bush over Al Gore. Obama over himself. now Trump twice.

We are a greedy selfish short-sighted ignorant people.

OK, I was focused on how Kurita thought the small escort carriers were fleet carriers and were the main fleet, but it does seem you are correct as "The ship profiles and aggressiveness caused the Japanese to think the destroyers were cruisers, and the destroyer escorts were full-sized destroyers."

I don't think a bolt action lends itself to what he had in mind. The problem with light machine guns is ammo they really can burn through a lot as opposed to a rifle.

I have to read up more on it to have an informed opinion.
But I thought the tankers liked their big 50 caliber machine guns on top.

Patton was a big believer in "marching fire." The squad would move forward and they would shoot up bushes windows walls any hiding place to keep the enemy's head down. This was possible with the semi-automatic rifle. new guys had to learn to waste ammo, and not worry so much about aimed shots.
