What is the cost of wildfire, windthrow and bark beetles for Europe’s forestry? We estimate that disturbances reduce Europe’s forest value by €115 bn, more than doubling to €247 bn under severe climate change. Led by @johannesmohr.bsky.social, out in @natclimate.nature.com doi.org/10.1038/s415...

What a pleasure to work on this important topic together with the great Félix Bastit under the perfect supervision of @rupertseidl.bsky.social and Thomas Knoke and with the great help of Marc Grünig, @wernerrammer.bsky.social , @corneliussenf.bsky.social and Dominik Thom. Thx for everything 🙏

We coupled forest growth, disturbance and economic models to simulate the interaction of forest productivity and disturbances under climate change… and there are big differences across Europe with C Europe being a particular hotspot of disturbance losses.

How expensive are 🪲💨🔥?! I can‘t believe it, but my 2nd PhD paper is finally published @natclimate.nature.com! Disturbances lower the economic value of Europes 🌲 by 29%... Climate change will increase it to up to 42%! (Now imagine a company looses 42% of its value…) doi.org/10.1038/s41558-025-02408-9

Could setting forest areas aside for conservation lead to more disturbances?🌲

Analysis of 314 pairs of managed & set-aside forests across Germany found no increase in disturbance rates in forest reserves. In fact, set-aside areas had fewer disturbances 🌏 🧪

Two inspiring days of discussions to better understand forests' adaptive capacity to disturbances! 🌳🔥🪲💨
Grateful for the inspiring group, the motivation, and the ideas we exchanged!
Thanks to @dfg.de for funding and to @edfm-tum.bsky.social for being part of the journey. Excited for what's ahead! 🚀

#SmartForest2025 started with a full house and a fantastic key note of @rupertseidl.bsky.social! Looking forward to all the discussions in the next days

The last signs are in place, and we're super excited for our #SmartForest2025 conference. Over the next two days, we'll discuss new smart tools and technologies to support forest science and management with both researchers and practitioners. Stay tuned and reach out if you're joining!🥳

iLand is the first forest landscape model to explicitly simulate forest microclimate. Why? Because microclimate effects propagate across scales and influence important processes such as decomposition, regeneration and bark beetle development. Read more in Braziunas et al. doi.org/10.1007/s109...

Important finding for impact modelers by @kornhuber.bsky.social et al.: Climatic extremes change faster/ more severely than anticipated by climate models. The consequences anticipated with impact models (based on climate model-driven forcings) might thus be conservative. www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...
