Based on our recent article in @finandsoc.bsky.social, we wrote a piece for @theconversation.com titled 'from art to assets' on how music does indeed sound all the same nowadays - and the role of streaming platforms in this process 😎

From art form to asset: our study found popular songs are becoming more generic
It’s largely down to the demands of streaming services.

Reviving Adorno's critique of the standardization of music, our article of the week reads streaming as a turn from Fordist production to financialized platforms where music is assetized and homogenized.

Super interesting visit to the Bundesbank money museum. Surprisingly detailed and well designed exhibits on asset purchases, transmission mechanisms, and financial plumbing. including a note that monetary policy is political! Can't escape the folk story of money emerging from barter though.

Check out this interesting new edited book! I was honored to be invited to write the afterword, and used the space to discuss the theoretical & political stakes involved in attempts to merge the international financial subordination (IFS) + financial statecraft + comparative capitalism literatures.🧵

What role do emerging markets play in the global financ? Are they subordinated within global financial hierarchies? Or do they have autonomy to use finance to pursue state objectives?
We explore these by combining insights on financial subordination, financial statecraft & comparative capitalism 2/
