The bootstrap metaphor began in late nineteenth / early twentieth century to indicate impossibility. “A poor man becoming a millionaire? You might as well try to pull yourself up by your own bootstraps.”

What awful people! And they are the same who hector us about some War on Christmas!

I totally agree with you! When I was an English teacher, I’d write for my students as examples of what I was asking them to do and share my writing process. Since I retired in June, I start my day writing for myself, but AI never touches my work. I want all my flaws as a writer to be my own.

JHC, I campaigned and voted for this POS!

When I was a Boy Scout in the ‘70s, we had red berets, and I hated it with a passion. Sliwa celebrates my childhood trauma

Even though I never followed Cilizza, I just went and blocked his dumb ass.

I write a lot of short stories, not to publish or share, just for myself and some friends, but I’d never freaking use AI. I’m not great or even particularly good, but I have too much self-respect to use slop. My flaws are my own. BTW, you are a great writer!

I’m watching it right now!

“[Randolph] Carter did not wish to meet a bhole.” I mean, should we tell him not to reach around?
October 16, 2025 at 11:53 PM
Oh gods, now the bholes are rustling!

Welp, I just checked out his feed, and I have become much worse for it.

As an old retired English teacher who still calls himself an English major, I say thank you!

So if it’s Biblical, will the American farmers not harvest the edges of their fields or pick up what the harvesters drop so they can leave it for the poor and the foreigners or nah?

Welcome back, Gretchen!
