I feel this map also gives misleading impression as regards Ireland. In 14th Century, English control was largely limited to "the Pale". Much of the country was still controlled by local chieftains.

Interesting that, post-Brexit, he also highlighted the EU's contribution.

A bit of an understatement, and not surprising. Those who sign up to NATO join an organisation specifically intended for defence. Even if there is possibility of EU "common defence", quite a few members are uncomfortable with idea, and/or unclear what it might entail.
