Canada was willing to put Canadian citizens and facilities in Iran in danger and likely retaliation they would face if the true purpose and hidden Americans were discovered, notwithstanding use of the passports.

Since it is an anniversary, our true US friends will remember Canadian officials approved the use of Canadian passports for US non-citizens in Iran. Canada overlooked its own passport laws and considerable risk to hide potential hostages.
