Happy birthday John Cooper Clarke.
I first saw him live in 1980s in a pub in Crouch End (I was in my 20s). Little did I know that some 40 years later in 2024 I would be seeing him at London Palladium with my son (in his 20s) and he would be captivating us both. A joy. @johncooperclarke.bsky.social

Really enjoyed Joachim Trier’s latest film ‘Sentimental Value’. Excellent performances headed by Renate Reinsve and Stellan Skarsgård as troubled actress and her erratic director father. The Oslo house and family home features brilliantly including in opening shots.

Maria Meneghini Callas sings Operatic Arias (Angel Records).

Such a fabulous record. Lots of tender touches. What a voice.
Verdi, Delibes, Meyerbeer, Rossini, Boito, Catalani, Giordano, Cilea.

Recorded in Watford Town Hall in 1954 with Philharmonia Orchestra and Tullio Serafin.

You may see many films this year but you probably won’t see one as urgent or important as Kaouther Ben Hania’s The Voice of Hind Rajab. A tough but very necessary watch about a young girl who was killed in 2024 by IDF in Gaza along with six relatives and two paramedics. Go see.

Very moved by Chloé Zhao’s film of Maggie O'Farrell’s novel ‘Hamnet’. Read the book (outstanding) and saw the play (good) and this is a very good adaptation. Jesse Buckley is outstanding. Super cinematography (Łukasz Żal) and cinematic framing.

Terrific couple of sets from @vijayiyer.bsky.social to start his two-day solo piano residency at a rapt @cafeotodalston.bsky.social. Playing of sensitivity, virtuosity and expression. Concluded with his take on Lennon and Ono’s ‘Imagine’. A privilege to be in the room.
