This is often the best way to keep enemy spell casters alive past the first round or two... only have them show up (or reveal themselves) once most of the PCs are already fully engaged in melee range with others.

This is one reason why I love BECMI D&D, the Birthright setting, and MCDM's Strongholds and Followers for 5e: They all include such concepts with easy to implement mechanics.
