4/ It has a constitutional responsibility to oppose misgovernment & abuse of power. It should NEVER abandon those principles simply for electoral advantage.

3/ And if parties conclude that it’s in their interest to block the agenda of authoritarian leaders, that’s good for politics. The job of an opposition is not simply to win the next election.

2/ What they shouldn’t do is to weigh the nation’s interests against that of their party. Regardless of what happens Trump is going to blame the shutdown on the Democrats anyway. But he would do so knowing that they were consequences for his misconduct.

1/ The Democrats shouldn’t overthink this. If they believe Trump’s agenda is dangerous to the country, they should take any chance to block it. If they think standards in public life matter & they’re worried by its erosion, they should take any opportunity to uphold them.

And I thought he was a Communist who wanted to redistribute wealth but “accidentally” joined the Far-Right like many of the people who voted for Trump.

Probably my favourite long late antiquity piece of art. The so-called "palimpsest" fresco in Santa Maria Antiqua in Rome shows consecutive layers of paintings from the sixth century (Mary as empress of heaven) all the way to the seventh and early eight century. The level of detail is just amazing.

I’m old enough to remember being told that in America you can’t be sentenced to prison without being convicted of a crime in a court of law.

If I were the leader of the opposition I wouldn’t spend my time being outraged at everything & constantly talk about topics which were irrelevant to the daily lives of the British people.

3/ This performance, which can include informal dress, aggressive or emotional rhetoric, and irreverent behavior, is used to signal genuineness and a break from the perceived elitism of traditional politicians.

2/ This strategy, known as populist disruptive performance, works to manufacture authenticity, discredit opponents, and galvanize a voter base. Populist leaders portray themselves as being from outside the political establishment, with "bad manners" and an unpolished, or "low" style.

1/ Populism relies heavily on "play acting", a calculated, disruptive performance of being an authentic "person of the people". This theatrical style deliberately contrasts with the formal, scripted behavior of the "corrupt elite".

“‘Doublethink’ is a process of indoctrination whereby the subject is to simultaneously accept two mutually contradictory beliefs as correct, often in contravention to one's own memories or sense of reality”

- George Orwell, 1984

Why are Goodhart and West so worried? Are minorities treated badly in Britain?

Just hear me out of for a second, but I have a radical idea. Starmer should attack Reform. He should tell the public they are being lied to by Reform & the right-wing press about the cause of the country's problems & that Reform is capitalising on this for political gain, like they did with Brexit.

Country that voted to be treated like a third country surprised it’s been treated like a third country.
