After a long break, about to start back up on the split flap sign.

Getting a soldering 101 lesson from my uncle in a couple weeks!

I'm getting close to the end of The Odin Project (learning to code)

...and I'm realizing I still don't know what sort of app to build!

😬

I don’t realize how much I miss making stuff until I get back in the shop after a long break.

One of my favorite feelings as a maker:

Using my skills to fix one of my kid's toys. I spent last weekend modeling and printing a replacement plastic part for my son's Hot Wheels Monster Truck launcher.

I got to practice 3D modeling, and the toy lives to see another day.

Win-Win.

Just shared my strategy for tackling the most ambitious maker project I've ever attempted: A Split Flap Display!

Let's see if my "break it into tiny problems" approach actually works 😅

First challenge: How do I make all these flaps?!

Day 1: This 3D printer is so easy I'll never need to change the default settings.

Day 365: Let me drop the top surface flow area by .02 before ironing to see if that leads to a smoother finish.

#3DPrinting - Any thoughts on how I can get the finish on top layer (left image) closer to the bottom layer (right image)?

Bambu A1. Black and white PLA. Ironing on the top layer.

I need a soldering iron upgrade.

I bought this super cheap one off Amazon years ago and I have lots of soldering coming up in my next project.

#Electronics nerds: What soldering iron do you recommend? Bonus points for any soldering tips!

This word clock is the first maker project I ever built.

I had no experience working with code, electronics, or wood.

So I broke the project down to smaller and smaller pieces until I landed on something I knew how to do. I figured it out piece-by-piece until eventually I had a working clock.

I am so happy I decided not to take on any commissions this holiday season.

I didn't realize how much pressure I felt to get everything done past holiday seasons. It felt like a looming cloud over all the festivities.

Finally done with Christmas shopping!

...Well except for that one last person. Oh, and that other person.

My home office is slowly filling up with things me or my fellow makers have created.

It’s awesome.

So much of being a good Product Manager is anticipating the information a stakeholder needs before they even know they need it.

There’s a moment in every woodworking project where it shifts from “Ugh this looks like crap” to “Damn, this looks nice!”

🎄Pro Tip:

Put all your Christmas lights on smart plugs so you can walk downstairs, say “Alexa Merry Christmas” and everything immediately turns on and carols start playing.

Happy Holidays!

How my coding projects always pan out:

The first 80% - My code is so neat and tidy!
The last 20% - Screw it. I'll turn this whole thing into a hot mess just to get it over the finish line.

Large 3D prints taking too long?

I'm realizing 10% infill works just as good as 15%.

Less material and less time!

My 3D printer has been running non-stop on a top-secret project for about a week.

I’m excited to show what I’m making off but I have to wait a bit longer for top secret reasons.

I promise it’s stupider than you think.

I recently restarted my daily writing habit.

Every morning I spend 15 minutes jotting down my thoughts and setting my daily goals.

My mood is better and I’m more productive.

Can’t beat it.

Finally… After some detours learning algorithms, git, and unit testing, I’m back to working on a real project in my coding course.

Next up… Battleship! ⚓️

I’m hoping for some advice from the #typography nerds among us…

I want to make one of these split flap signs.

Do you have a recommendation for a font that would look slick and be easy to read from a distance?

What surprised me the most while learning to code?

Spending time with pencil and paper before writing a single line of code helps SO MUCH!
