4) The Old Man and the Sea

Had never read this before, and absolutely loved it. Was on the edge of my seat for him finally catching the fish, and was so stressed about the sharks. Really appreciated the celebration of stubbornness. Old Man has that sigma grindset.

3) The Great When

PAINFUL. Overly floral language that's just dripping with effort. Every (every!!) sentence crammed with tortured metaphors to the extent that it's almost unreadable. Hamfisted inclusion of "interesting" facts about London. One decent character. Forced myself through it.

2) The Fellowship of the Ring

Have been reading The Hobbit to the 6-year-old, so got the thirst for more. This was the first re-read of it where I realised that he actually makes "untamed" nature sound scary and unpleasant. The vibe is anti-industrial re: orcs, but hardly pro-wild

john's book thread 2026 📚

1) Birnam Wood

Super gripping thriller set against the background of ecological destruction and extraction, the impunity of the super rich and the dangers of surveillance tech. V enjoyed the dynamics of the activist group, at once performative and earnest

wild stuff happening, also in the coverage of this

media describing the venezuelan government as "authoritarian" while giving no qualifiers for the US

repeating the sanitised use of the word "capture"

no mention yet that if the reports are true, it's highly illegal even by the US's own laws
