Facing the storm - Goblin Valley, #Utah

#landscapephotography #geology #erosion #monochrome #classicmono #EastCoastKin #statepark #hiking #rockformation #boulders #hoodoo #sepia
At lower left, boulders are stacked chaotically. Off to the right center, a huge hoodoo with a sculpted top piece seems to be gazing off to the right, where dark clouds loom. The sky left of the hoodoo shows broken clouds and areas of bright light.

Fly me to the moon: White Rock Lake hike/bike trail this morning

#supermoon #blackandwhite #hiking #Dallas #suburbia
Two male walkers and a female jogger - she with her arms raised, airplane-like - stride away from the camera toward a full moon in the sky above. There is a stop sign in the middle ground and a striped asphalt path leading to the walkers. The waters of a lake are visible at left center, with an office building rising in the distance over the trees.

Chimney Rock at end of day: Cimarron Range, #Colorado

#RockInTuesday #EastCoastKin #landscapephotography #mountain #rockformation #Canon5DII #monochrome #classicmono #sepia #blackandwhite #boulder
Low-key, sepia-toned rendering of a rocky pinnacle rising into a clear sky, with a single wisp of cloud at far right. The face of the mountain is lit with the last light of the day. Below is a forest of aspens, barely-lit except for a single tree that's catching the light, making it stand out. There is a huge boulder at bottom left.

Red Mountain - s. of Ouray, CO

#aspens #fall
A reddish-tinted mountain peak towers over this autumn scene, with aspens just beginning to turn while pines maintain their dark green hue. At center right is an old mine building, still standing proudly after all these years. The sky is blue with puffy white clouds interspersed.

Woods at an angle: California, USA

The foreground (lower part of image) shows a heavily-etched piece of deadwood at an upward angle from left to right. Above and behind we see the tapering lower section and trunk of a huge tree that rises out of sight. On either side are additional tall trees.

A darkened view of a forested glade with three evident trees and abundant open space. In the grassy foreground are two bright white figures - one an arrow and the other a semicircle with an open top, in which an "x" has been inscribed.

Sacred datura in #blackandwhite for #BlueSkyArtShow

A pair of white angel trumpet blooms amid a background of mixed foliage. The cups of the flowers are elegant and sculpted in appearance.

Record of life: Kings Canyon Natl. Park

The surface of a sawn tree exposes braille-like figurations on the stump. The center of the image focuses on a dark black gap with the ragged shape of a lake or perhaps an island.

That hill in the distance at left (left-hand pic) appears similar to the formations in my image.

Dawning of the shack era

Besmart, I don't know. But I think they're high up enough in this stratigraphic column to take them into the Cenozoic, as opposed to the Mesozoic sediments down at ground level. I'll have to study up more on the basic geology of the area (which, of course, I'm keeping to myself).

Straightforward view of a complex erosion #Scape in NW New Mexico

#wilderness #colorful #strata #geology #erosion #badlands #NewMexico #EastCoastKin #landscape #photography
Colorful bands of eroding mudstone sediments feature on this steeply sloping face of a hillside. At its base are yellow and white strata to complement the pink and red higher up. At bottom we see a dead tree and several clumps of grasses around it. The sky above is deep blue with puffy white clouds.

Rocks in a hard place: undisclosed badlands locality, NW New Mexico

#blackandwhite #classicmono #eastcoastkin #NewMexico #landscapephotography #boulders #badlands #backofbeyond #erosion #geology
Three large boulders take center stage on this low slope beneath an eroded mudstone pinnacle. Behind the largest boulder to the right stands a juniper, with an array of other sparse bushes and grasses scattered about the slope. The hint of sky at upper right shows evidence of clouds.

Appreciate it! I'm only now, at this late stage, learning how best to process images I took a dozen+ years ago. Fortunately, I had the wherewithal to save them as RAW files.

Giger wall: undisclosed badlands locality, NE New Mexico

#stratigraphy #badlands #erosion #geology #landscapephotography #hiking #backofbeyond #sedimentation #wilderness #offthebeatenpath
A vertical wall of layered sediments shows varying layers of color and consistency, from fine-grained mudstone to fully included boulders. There is also a great deal of color variation in the layers, ranging from ash gray to pale yellow and rust red. Scattered grasses on the floor of the wash add splashed of green to the palette, while the sky - glimpsed through a gap at upper right - shows pale blue with wispy white clouds.

A window of sorts for #WindowsOnWednesday

#AhShiSlePah #NewMexico #badlands #EastCoastKin #blackandwhite #landscapephotography #erosion #geology #wilderness #backofbeyond #classicmono
Pre-sunrise light softens the textures on this badlands scene, making the erosion channels less harsh. The key feature, at right, is a hard capstone perched atop a divided column of softer mudstone, creating a darkened, cave-like aperture. The sky is featureless.

Someone's gotta hoodoo it.

Steven, thanks! This image from 2010 was taken with a Canon 5D II at 45mm (Tamron 28-75 zoom) - f/8, 1/200 sec., ISO 125, with a two-step underexposure. In post I used Affinity Pro and Nik SilverEfx to get the detail just the way I wanted.
