I think Trump is an adversary to Europe, at least to the extent he doesn't think he's getting enough in return for providing US support. Transactional. Even not so sure. He's best understood if you think of him as aligned with Putin. The great majority of the US population is aligned with Europe

The question really isn't whether Europe can defend itself without US support; it's will it get the US support it needs.
