这涉及到传播学讨论已久的话题——技术哲学。长久以来的主导意识形态都将科学技术视为进步的力量，甚至赋予其乌托邦式的想象。我们期盼信息技术带来的信息民主化能够推动政治民主化和社会多元化。
但现实并不如想象的那般美好。技术的进步带来了普通人智识水平的下降，尤其是在基础技能方面。科技所许诺的更多自由和休闲空间也未实现，取之而来的是平台资本主义对人们有限空余时间的霸占，人们缺少自由去发展自身的兴趣爱好、增进见识。
最后，在政治层面，虽然信息技术通过为公民提供信息来增强民主，但现实情况是公共讨论变得分散和肤浅，导致政治和公众之间的脱节。

无差别杀人事件一再出现，表明社会结构出现了很大问题，如果不从这一点入手，而只是动用权威震慑，无法解决问题。人们彼此关心、伸出援手，建立一个更好的社会，才能降低发生这种事的机率，或在事情发生时减轻危害。
检视体制，不代表否定个人原因，体制和个人并非二元对立。社会不可能对每个极端案例负责。但把焦点全放在个人是简化问题。对一心寻死的人，死刑不但不是威慑，反而成为一种鼓励。死刑提供给凶手一种将行为合理化、壮美化的想像，甚至一种自杀的方式。

恰恰相反，聚焦社会结构的问题可以让我们反击这类大规模行凶行为。
