There is something similar in the US, where rural (overwhelmingly Republican) voters are regarded by the media as more authentically American than urban voters, despite urban voters forming a majority of the population (and economic heft).

He's a symptom of a much wider malaise in news reporting, which we also saw in relation to Boris Johnson - the breathless excitement because he was newsworthy, good copy, and no focus on how catastrophically unsuited he was to the actual job of PM.

These people formed the worst government of modern times, soundly rejected by the British public in 2024. But if you add to their qualities of venality, corruption and incompetence the extra one of disloyalty, that changes everything.
