I think what they are is unambiguously <confident> in their nostalgic zest (add Parry's Jerusalem), composed in a period when other, trailblazing composers were ripping up the musical rule-book, often brilliantly, or, in VW's case (Lark Ascending), heartbroken loss for 1914-18 & the world it ended
