Can’t say, not sure how well the receiver would be able to define the signal strength, or if they would know well enough to respond as such. They would likely hear the mic keying, and respond with nothing heard.

The system started with morse and written comms from my understanding, but these days 5x5 is a throwback to the early days of radio comms that has been kept alive and used mainly as 5x5 only, and in this day of digital comms, voice and written, its 5x5 or nothing.

And considering there wasn’t a protest at that time in that area, you can’t take your second amendment to the streets at all, In case you may run into an ICE capade.

I always figured it was “I hear you good, 5 out of 5”. But I was just a maintenance guy, that fixed and maintained comms gear, not the operator.

5x5 is pretty much slang these days, and probably only used as a callback to the old analog comms days. Not sure if any other deviation would be used or not in this day.

Have never heard 1 by 1. So can’t say. Usually have only heard 5x5, because I maintained my equipment and comms were clear. Will have to see what google says.

It’s usually voice comms, though sometimes typed. Signal strength and intelligibility coexist. It’s like a “rate this thing on a scale of 1 to 10” thing. 1 by 5, you are badly garbled and only hear a word occasionally. 5x5 you are crystal clear.

I couldn’t get an internet connection out of the building except by tethering my cell phone. They would not allow anything to be connected to the network. Males no sense that 5x5 would have the server outside of the facility out of gov control.

What about the students that were here legally that had their visa revoked because the state department decided for no reason that makes sense?

Weird, I have set up DHS security video systems, pre-Trump. The NVR was housed in house in the facilities server room, with no connection to the outside. DHS/GSA standards must have gone into the toilet since then. Nothing left the control of the DHS/GSA/other govt entities for any of the systems
