@nbellono.bsky.social and colleagues observed that Elysia sea slugs steal chloroplasts from algae and store them in specialized organelles called kleptosomes. During times of starvation, this allows them to photosynthesize in support of their energy needs! 🧪

Graphical abstract of the linked paper.

Sea slugs retain and store foreign chloroplasts in kleptosome organelles (top). Kleptosomes use luminal ATP-sensing ion channels to support photosynthesis (bottom left). Kleptosomes digest chloroplasts during prolonged starvation (bottom center). Slugs and corals use convergent mechanisms of endosymbiosis (bottom right).

New human inborn error of immunity.

We describe the first reported human with a monogenic disorder caused by the disruption of ZBTB7B, which encodes the transcription factor ThPOK.

New in @jem.org - Antunes et al. describe a pathogenic mutation in the deubiquitinase USP5 that is linked to congenital insensitivity to #pain. They show that mice with this mutation are hyposensitive to acute and chronic pain, and uncover the underlying mechanism. rupress.org/jem/article/...

Hi Huiqing,
as an occasional sequencer of tRNAs I would be really grateful for a short thread on this paper! I'd be especially curious about where you see the advantages / disadvantages of this compared to other state-of-the-art methods like mim-tRNA-seq, which also identifies many modifications THX

A PhD position is open in my group here in Heidelberg. We'll use cool primary cell models of osteosarcoma and genetic screens to understand and overcome mechanisms of clinically acquired drug resistance. It'll be a blast!
