In USA kids who attend their local school but live a few miles away (1.5m near me) are typically provided with free transportation (usually those yellow buses). Obviously there is no such thing as a free lunch (someone somewhere always pays, as the economists tell us). Socialized busing in USA!

Well it was a bummer to lose in double overtime after drawing even with 30s to go in the 4th quarter, but the atmosphere was awesome and I have to say Oregon are a very good team.

Not a full explanation for the direction of change with alcohol, but I believe the number of samples was lower in waves 0 and 1...(not sure why) and highest in wave 2 (hence the tight confidence-intervals), The details can always be found in the Supplementary Appendix!

I love the ABCD study, but something doesn't look right in these hair analyses. 1. How can alcohol use rates go down with age? 2. Wave 2 (age 12) looks odd. A steady increase in substance use with age is typical but wave 2 seems off the curve. Can anyone explain these results?

"Biochemically verified substance use indicated 7.1% of 15-16 year olds engaged in moderate+ cannabis use, 0.3% heavily used alcohol, and 4.7% heavily used nicotine." The most effective tobacco dependence treatment is probably weekly counseling (ideally in the context of group support) for at least 6 weeks with the offer of additional support thereafter, combined with either varenicline or nicotine patch plus 4mg gum/lozenge starting a week before the quit date.

NNAL is a metabolite of NNK, a potent lung carcinogen. This study shows the urine NNAL concentration in adult regular cigarette smokers and exclusive nicotine e-cig users 2013-2018. NNAL is consistently >95% lower in ecig users than smokers. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...

Re my quote about caffeine. Below is a link to a study finding a -ve association between caffeine use and cognitive performance in 10 year olds. This data is cross-sectional and cannot prove causality. Most human data on nicotine effects has these limitations. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...
