I think about buildings and the built environment a lot. Optimist. He/Him. Views are mine.
Adjusting for inflation, barleycorns of yesteryear were considerably smaller. Im going to say false.

That is so weird. Do people in the UK not use heat pumps to do both? Rest of the world manages just fine with a reversing valve.

Got it. So it really was just a time of year limitation then. I'd be curious if the same conclusions would carry for cooling? I suspect the answer would be, yes, but know those pesky water vapors in the air have a way of screwing up well laid plans.

Im not seeing the bike lane in option C. This approval seemed to approve the exploration of thr option, but that's it. Not sure what the $1B is for. This is easily a $15-20B project.

Exactly why we need small evs, freight rail, and better public transport. Also why we should get rid of the gas tax in lieu of a GVWR tax.

'Infinite singularities' sounds like the physics equivalent of 'two wrongs make a right'. Jokes aside, this is a really accessible post for non-optics experts. More science communication should be written like this. Kudos.

Don't worry about it, Patton. That staining on the sill implies some is/will be rotting away on the inside. They plants will breath just fine through that moldy opening.

This study from Fecher, et al. had some interesting perspectives from academic experts and their use of AI.

Only about 70 participants in the study, but there were some good qualitative info in the results section.

Literal hours were spent explaining why we cant have a vapor barrier between the slab and subfloor after deciding to flash and batt in the crawl space. It's very easy to screw this stuff up.

Thanks, Philip. Looks, I'll be installing a couple of these next month. Theyre among the most efficient AWHPs on the market. I'll buy you guys dinner if I average anywhere close to the stated COPs on the sell sheet.

Most boilers sold today are .90-.95. That 5-10% loss wouldn't get you to 4. I guess my point is it's perfectly fine to say even on its worst day a HP is 2.5x more efficient than a top of lin gas boiler on its best day. Overselling just makes customers sad.
November 21, 2025 at 1:49 PM
Look I'm glad heat pumps are popularizing, but can we stop overselling the COP? While 4+ COP happens, Most HE units operate between 2.5-3 efficiency, even lower in colder climates. Thats still a win without giving deniers talking points about how green tech doesn't live up to the promise.
