Scored the VX7R at the #hamradio swap this weekend. Came with spare battery so I was able to fire up the weirdo on the left I got off CL a bit ago.

One of the only radios ever made that can _legally_ transmit on both the 2 meter band and airband. I could summon two types of feds at the same time!

A Yaesu (Vertex) VXA-700 airband + 2 meter ham radio on the left, and a Yaesu VX-7R 6m/2m/70cm ham radio on the right.

Install almost finished!

Yaesu FTM-10 motorsports radio (waterproof, built to be used with gloves, Bluetooth to helmet), a 7 amp-hour LiFePO4 battery, and a Nilite battery isolator to avoid drain on the starting battery.

Yaesu FTM-10 control head mounted on handlebars. Big red button is the push-to-talk switch (repurposed dirtbike kill switch)

Wiring finished for the secondary DC setup - Nilite isolator will disconnect the ham system to keep the starting battery happy and recharge it when the bike restarts.

Physical install - the Yaesu radio body is in the far back (with the silver bolt through it), then the 7 amp-hour LiFePO4 in front of that, isolator in foreground.

Radio antennas need a good 'counterpoise' or 'other half' to function properly. As motorcycles have somewhat minimal ground planes (in a car, body panels do this job), I lined the entire tailpiece with copper foil, sold to shield guitar control cavities. Looks like JWST!

if theyre going for wiring or vacuum lines you can score some of honda's rodent tape. they had to make it bc they use wires with insulation thats partially soy; mice and rats love it

I literally can't do this. It's behind Duo 2FA. Second of all, my employer would not allow it - I'm not permitted to share login info with anybody, period. This seems like a pretty slam dunk lawsuit in normal world, but we don't live in that any more.

And lock it to something if you run overnight! After a big ice storm my town saw a wave of gen thefts. They'd find homeowner's lawnmower, start it, then lift the generator. The lights are out and you still hear an engine so you roll over in bed and go back to sleep.
