I am not sure many people do have strong views about EU one way or the other. They had stronger views during the referendum & after but most people have put it to one side now. Most people dont post on social media & extremes on all sides tend to be amplified.

Who does have the time or inclination to understand the EU?
Most UK citizens found out more about the EU after the vote to Leave than at any other time.
Many people dont travel in mainland Europe or deal with European countries in business so why would they know much?

My preference was with the earlier EEC as more of a group of trading nations run for the benefit of the people rather than for wealthy cross border individuals & giant corporations. The EU bureaucracy & regulation has killed meaningful growth.

Labour,Tories and Libdems are so bad it is giving Farage an open goal. They show no signs of reversing that situation.

I am aware of how UK governments failed to use restrictions on FOM that were available to them, such was their addiction to cheap unskilled Labour in their pursuit of growth. The result is low productivity, pathetic GDP per head & employers do not train young people.Falling living standards & Brexit.
January 7, 2026 at 7:24 AM
That could only happen if EU became a country.Would you be in favour of that happening?I have only heard a few people on call in radio shows suggest this would be a good idea.
January 7, 2026 at 7:12 AM
Because had you became a UK citizen you could have voted to Remain in EU & all the other elections. You left that responsibility to others & did not like the outcome.Like you said the difference was miniscule, every vote counted.
I hope things go better for you in France.

So you admit that after 44 years you were not fully invested in the UK,did not take up UK citizenship and then after the referendum you were upset that other people who had more of a stake or interest in the UKs future voted to Leave EU?

My friends wife is Australian. She wanted to get a UK passport.People are different. She is still Australian just as you would have been Dutch if you had a UK passport.Unlike you she has more rights than you had when you were in UK.Did you vote in the Brexit referendum?

Always sensible to ponder on a big purchase, but not this time.
Better luck next time🙂

Social media makes expectations virtually impossible for most men to meet with red flags etc.Really difficult to be masculine, mentally strong, take the lead if you are also kind, sensitive & very open. Many males do not have a positive role model growing up & lack the positive masculine traits.

Your male friend puts on weight "You look fatter than the last time we met".Doesnt happen in female relationships.

Who can afford to fly off at Christmas? The most expensive time of year to fly so its likely the wealthy.
January 6, 2026 at 2:21 PM
I had the same experience but Christmas is when people have money & gift vouchers to spend.
Tuesday in Jan might be different.

My girlfriend is a waitress on close to the min wage.Yesterday her boss had to cut her hours due to less customers, incoming rates rises, higher employment costs. Her hourly rate is higher but hours have been cut.The practical realities of awful anti business & employment policies from this government.
January 6, 2026 at 10:35 AM
It is not a catastrophe but I run a small business & we know when people do not have disposable income early on.They tell you they cannot afford repairs, they delay payments, they dont plan a holiday in summer. All the signs of a recession.
January 6, 2026 at 10:15 AM
Do the wage rises cover the increases in food & energy costs?
People dont feel better off just because the stats say they should.
Do you think anyone in hospitality facing massive rises in rates & wage rises should be positive?
Government has failed to show a positive way forward.

Brexit is a dead issue outside BSky.
It only becomes relevant when a rejoining party tops the UK polls & the economies in France & Germany see significant growth. Both are some way off.
January 6, 2026 at 8:01 AM
When you started living/working in more than one country did you not have to take some sort of personal responsibility rather than laying all your problems at the feet of the EU & UK gov?
Personally if I decided to live outside UK gaining citizenship would be my first priority.
January 6, 2026 at 7:45 AM
The significant change is that middle class Mums who would have been nailed on Labour,Tory or Libdem voters are now prepared to vote Reform.
Mums take the safety of their children & daughters seriously. They feel let down.

If everyone on X,Facebook,Bluesky & TikTok are saying Maduro was kidnapped & the BBC says something else would anyone under 70 years old notice?
BBC is becoming irrelevant.
January 5, 2026 at 2:02 PM
Yes and that should have indicated that maybe UK was not a good fit.
January 4, 2026 at 9:48 AM
I guess it comes down to the practical situation.Island nations have the stop start situation with ferries so checks are convenient.
Interesting also that Italy/France border checks HGV vehicles but not cars with not many points of entry/exit.
January 4, 2026 at 9:46 AM
It was definitely a strong reason for people who had no strong feelings either way.Cameron made a lot of noise & then came back with very little.
I can see the EUs position. It would have had to make huge concessions that would possibly undermine the EU philosphy.
