Archaeology, banjos, Taitokerau, preschoolers and teens, lack of executive function, second chances, mental exhaustion, well-toasted bread, banjos. Not the real-life Indiana Jones, more a dwarfish sort of Evelyn O'Connell
Reversion to the mean. Stock-trampled 99% cockle (Austrovenus sturchburyi) shell midden with a little but of floating fire-cracked rick and charcoal. Pataua.

Summer fieldwork so obviously 4 came down with a cold overnight and Dr Marine is missing work to look after him.

Sounds about right.

Going through a real old gumboot tea phase.

Ditched the Dilmah, finished the Choysa, and now on to the Woolies home brand.

Alpine strawbs are cranking, too!

1m LIDAR-derived hillslope of the pā under pines with terraces showing nicely, and GPSd features with not bad correspondence given it was just my S22. 0.6m accuracy with 60 sats/40 in fix

I remember when you were lucky to get 20/12 sats in fix with survey kit.

Nice to have LIDAR for the region 2.

RETVRN to hand written surveyors notebooks with cute little pā drawings.

Three pages with three pā from the survey of the Maungaturoto Block in 1912. Fieldbook NA 2552 courtesy of the LINZ historic field books database.

The last one is where I was a week ago, under the pines.

Woah dad would have been 95 today.

The last lucid thing he said to me was "You're the only one with common sense" and I will forever be trying to live up to that.

Photos are all Ur-Dad, rocking walk shorts and other late 70s/early 80s styles. My earliest memories.

Pataua drownings rahui was made smaller today so lots of traffic coming up the coast to launch from Ngunguru and Tutukaka and now this crash. Not great.

Two engines, ambos, cops and a horses ass.

Also got this sweet historic map art print of the motu.

I had grabbed a water-damaged copy of the same print on Thursday and then yesterday while I was dropping off stuff one of the mums said "There's another map come in, might be better than the other one"

Everything's coming up Jono!

Dropped around some mail to the lady we bought our place from yesterday and she asked me to take some boxes of stuff down to the Playcentre garage sale.

Waving this carrot at 17 while saying "oh-la-la" then making it do a fart is apparently very uncool.

Pā recorded as visible from the road in 1969, and not otherwise recorded or revisited. Base of defensive ditch with 1m scale. Under pines now but still in good nick. Dude who planted it disappeared at sea...Ohaeawai, Taitokerau

17th C whare (Māori dwelling) excavated at R10/494, Motutapu Is, Tamaki Makarau-Auckland. My fieldshool, Jan 1998, and a perfect intro to field archaeology, pre-digital recording.

And an 1885 photo of a whare in Maniapoto-King Country.

Knock knock?

Hu's there?

But seriously. When doing the last of your moving and cleaning at night in Taitokerau, dont leave your truck door open with the engine on because your phone is flat...You get a lot of hop-ons.
