The sidebar to a Brickset review of the 2024 Green Goblin "Constuction Figure" buildable action figure kit. It has been given a 2/5 star overall rating, 2/5 building experience, 2/5 parts, 3/5 playability, and 2/5 value for money ratings. "I initially purchased this Marvel set because I was curious what modern LEGO's take on a contraction-like model would be. After the CCBS system petered out in 2018 it seemed like LEGO was done pursuing action figure builds, but the Marvel Construction Figure line presents a new take on that classic formula. Now following in the footsteps of detailed LEGO props, we have upscaled takes on Marvel characters. "While previous attempts at action figures conjured up new building styles and part repertoires, this new iteration uses plain old LEGO pieces for the bones and details of the model. They created a new face mold to be shared between most of the sets. Unfortunately, this disappointing lack of new elements is why the Construction Figures are allowed to exist in the first place. In the modern era, LEGO's rules about specialised [sic] part use have tightened. The system of checks and balances dictates that they won't create a huge suite of new pieces just to bolster a small sub-theme like they would've done in 2002, or even in 2012. "What results from this bureaucracy are boring builds that feel identical to every other LEGO set on the market. It's already become a repetitive formula: Galidor ratchet joints for the frame and then smooth curved detail pieces scattered across the skeleton. There's no spice in this affair. Within the figure itself, there wasn't much interesting part use, there weren't any printed pieces apart from the face, and there weren't any surprise play features waiting at the end of the build. "The Green Goblin's flier helps alleviate this dullness. It's use of purple Technic panels and scimitar pieces makes the building process feel a little more engaging. A different mode of building goes a long way. It's also a great inclusion for how much more dynamic it makes the set. The prospect of this kit as a standard display piece justifies the flier. I think a stand to add elevation and new angles could bolster the appeal further." "The construction figure line has got a lot of hate online for many reasons. Mainly for its high prices and use of generic pieces. I think I have to agree on those two points. I purchased this thing on clearance for $15, mainly for parts, before realising [sic] that this set doesn't really have a surplus of noteworthy parts. The heavy use of curved tiles made the build a drag to get through, so many small tiles all in a row. Worse still, they ask you to do the tedious application of tiny green tiles twice for each arm and leg. It's perhaps the least fun I've had building a LEGO set. "On that other point, that price tag really puts things into perspective. While this set has more pieces than practically any Bionicle set ever made, it lacks the substance of Bionicle's Titan priced sets. If you go by the inflation-adjusted price, this Green Gobline [sic] set is the same price as Makuta the main antagonist of Bionicle. In general, due to this being a licenced [sic] toy of a popular character, it's hard to ignore the fact that non-LEGO action figures already exist for all of these Marvel characters. While lines like Bionicle and Hero Factory created new worlds and characters you couldn't find anywhere else, this new series delivers what is expected in an already saturated market. When you purchase a Bionicle set, you aren't only receiving an action figure, but a peak into a mysterious world built to ignite the imagination. You can't get Bionicle anywhere besides LEGO; you can get the Green Goblin for cheaper elsewhere. "The criticism of Construction Figures I can't get behind are complaints over wonkyness or inaccuracies to the source material. Not that there wasn't a strong president to this, but some of the more humanoid characters, like Captain America, look very strange in this style. I like that, to me that gives these sets an edge. Such a dry series needs something to make it stand out. Ten years out, that might be the only relevance these sets retain." "In conclusion, while the construction figure series seems like an attempt to revitalise [sic] Bionicle and the basic contraction figure form, in practice its basic qualities come off as anti-Bionicle in nature. It proves that you can check off all the boxes without capturing the spirit." Under a dotted line, bright yellow text claims "11 out of 12 people thought this review was helpful."
