I've been sitting on my hands about this for a while, but here’s some news. My book The Tattooed Hills; journeys to Chalk Hill Figures, will be published in 2026 by the excellent folk at Aurum.

Thanks Helen! I was very pleased with myself. As usual.

Here it is, the gorgeous cover of The Tattooed Hills by the talented illustrator Jon McCormack. It's just perfect!

The book is out next spring and you can preorder a copy here: geni.us/TheTattooedH...

This looks great from @littletollerbooks.bsky.social – a campaign to crowdfund a book on the Cumbrian home and work of Kurt Schwitters. I popped into his Merz Barn there a few years ago, a really crackers place then run by people no longer with us

Our friends at the brilliant @littletollerbooks.bsky.social have just launched a new crowdfunding project for 'Looking for Mr Schwitters' — an innovative and finely illustrated book about the émigré artist Kurt Schwitters’ final years in the Lake District www.caughtbytheriver.net/2025/09/look...

Extraordinary! Not seen it in years, suspect it's 'of its time.'

TBH my late mum was fond of saying 'LADY AUHORESS' in crowded places in her best telephone voice when describing someone who had lived in her village. I think she thought it made her sound posh and literary.

Although whether one can accurately describe it as nonfiction is another matter.

The Usborne 'World of the Unknown: Ghosts' freaked me out as a kid and I'm not the only one, given its recent reissue.

I wonder also if some of it has to do with those forever brown interpretation boards or 1970s museum displays? Like the artist only had beige to work with. Always looked so grim.

I mean, I would say this, but Luke is right on Worpole, and many other things.

Especially alarmed by '20% discount on collection' tagline .

What these mathematical tests from your childhood look like now: you won't believe the eight times table!

Extraordinary that it was still possible, but hard, to travel overland then, and you must be delighted, now, you did so. Hotels in new cities are the epitome of loneliness I think.

These colours always remind of my 1st yr out of university.
I was living in a remote cottage in the New Forest nr Beaulieu.
Such a sudden shock of loneliness.
As @jonwoolcott.bsky.social writes "Nature doesn't care about us, or how we feel about it - it's purpose is not to heal us".

What memories this season must summon for you! I had a moment like that today too, as summer reappears.
