Then, all at once, the insects begin to molt and shed, abandoned exoskeletons crunching beneath hooked feet, their instincts screaming at them to ESCAPE. Pressure builds behind her eyes, against her eardrums, at the back of her throat as a hemipteran army marches on. Silence is what it takes for the pressure valve to burst, five hundred pairs of wings twitching to life and flying to freedom at top speed the moment Ximena finishes speaking. Is she waiting for Orianna to say something? She’s probably waiting for Orianna to say something. You know. Like how conversations work. She briefly considers pretending to struggle with English, but won’t insult Ximena’s intelligence. So instead, rather dumbly, she says, “This is the Viktor is dead phone call.” “I’m so sorry, mija.” It’s morbid, the immediate sense of relief. Relief that it’s over. Relief that it wont be looming over her, this monster living beneath her bed. This is it, the single most difficult moment of Orianna’s life. And she’s still breathing. Shame is quick to follow.”

It was Sevika who spoke it into existence, hands of flesh and metal cradling a ceramic scrying bowl, but she would be far from the last seer to confirm it: if Vi touched the person she loved most in the world, they would die. Curling into Vander’s side while he played with her hair before bed quickly became the two of them laying on opposite sides of the bed while he raked an extendable back scratcher through her hair, a pillow between them for good measure. Benzo pinching her cheeks or lightly flicking her nose each time he saw her became Benzo giving her a nod and a, /hello, little lady/. Sevika tackling Vi to the ground, making the girl laugh until she wasn’t sure whether she was about to pee or pass out, became Sevika procuring a boxing dummy for Vi to take out her anger on. All this to say, a life devoid of touch didn’t have to be a life devoid of love. Vi had lost count of how many times she’d dressed as Rogue for Halloween.”

Her husband answers on the first ring, which could be strange, but for all she knows, it’s perfectly normal for him to answer so quickly. She never calls him. “Orianna.” The canary that lives in the hollow of her throat has stopped singing, telling her to evacuate the coal mine. She’s only ever spoken in toxic fumes, her tongue a stranger to the taste of clean air. “I won’t be home tomorrow.”

Reposting my wip Wednesday post from yesterday because I forgot alt text!
Ten Years Ago The microbiome in Jayce’s gut is having a half decent time. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the rest of him. When Miguel initially asked if he could use their technically-but-just-barely off campus apartment to host his definitely-not-a surprise party, Jayce answered with an apprehensive yes. Jayce has always had a difficult time saying no to pretty boys, which is why he’s currently nursing both a kombucha and a headache, purple strobe lights somehow shining directly into his retinas regardless of where in the apartment he stands. Finding a roommate via Grindr had never been a part of Jayce’s plan. Miguel was supposed to be nothing but a hazy memory of a half decent fuck, a contact in his phone under the name Way Out of Your League. Jayce’s previous roommate was in the process of moving out the night Jayce and Miguel met, the living room a Russian nesting doll of cardboard boxes, packing tape, and black Sharpies. Miguel never left. There was an unsuccessful attempt at a romantic relationship, as Jayce is physically affectionate and Miguel is only physically affectionate when drunk. They’ve remained amicable enough.
