Built in 1942, the 576 ran from Nashville to Atlanta for nearly a decade. It’s currently undergoing a complete restoration by the Tennessee Central Railway Museum.

No. 576 is a 4-8-4 Northern type steam locomotive built in August 1942 by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) of Schenectady, New York, for the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway (NC&StL). The locomotive, part of the technologically advanced J3 class, operated from Nashville to Atlanta, Georgia for nearly a decade. During World War II, the J3s hauled heavy freight and troop trains. After the war, they were used in freight and passenger service until the early 1950s, when dwindling traffic and the onset of dieselization led to their retirement and scrapping by early 1952. No. 576, the only surviving mainline NC&StL steam locomotive, was donated to the city of Nashville, Tennessee in 1953, and put on display at in Centennial Park. After nearly 66 years of being exposed to the elements, Nashville Steam relocated No. 576 to the Tennessee Central Railway Museum in 2019. The locomotive is currently undergoing a complete mechanical rebuild and restoration for special events and excursion service. The final restoration is estimated to cost approximately $2.5-$3 million, and take several years to complete. More information: https://www.nashvillesteam.org
