Writing deepens my understanding of the world. Art helps me see differently. Craft reminds me that there is always more than one way forward. #NLCT
I'm deepening my relationship with my community. I'm practicing corporeal politics by getting outside and going to local events. I'm walking around my neighborhood and starting conversations with my neighbors. I'm learning that I can't seek community without also providing community.

Your annual reminder that Dr. King believed in guaranteed universal basic income that gave all people a dignified life, guaranteed housing for all, guaranteed access to a high quality education, and said that “no one should be forced to live in poverty while others live in luxury.”

I have tried to learn how to knit a bajillion times. It never stuck. But I *think* I'm getting the hang of crochet! (I'm also reminding myself not to compare my skills to those who have been crocheting for years, when I've been crocheting for days.)

I used to finish reading every book I started. Now if a book doesn't grab my attention in the first 50 pages, I abandon it. Every once in a while a book hooks me just enough to keep going, but never reels me in all the way. #booksky

I'm currently reading "The World Without Us" by Alan Weisman. I stumbled upon it at the library. It was published in 2007, so the world is in even more trouble now than it was. I find it oddly comforting that the earth will be just fine once we humans obliterate ourselves.

I left Facebook in 2016. Now I'm trying to break away from Instagram. But I'm part of a community on that platform, and I hate to break those ties. I also love the artists and creatives and local organizations on the 'gram. This feels like a good Twitter replacement. Can it replace Instagram too?

Today was art-filled. I dropped off some of my work at The Annex in New London, bopped around a few of the galleries and local shops, and ended the day making a ceramic bowl at an art opening at Expressiones. I love my little city. #NLCT

Highly recommended reading! Root shock is a term coined by Dr. Fullilove to capture the traumatic stress reaction people have to being suddenly and forcibly separated from their homes. It results from both natural and man-made disasters, like war and urban development.

In 2019, I saw Howardena Pindell's retrospective at the Rose Art Museum. I sat in the audience listening to Naomi Beckwith, Valerie Cassel Oliver, and Howardena Pindell talk about the work of being an artist and its relationship to being an activist.
“Even though early on, my work faced a lot of rejection, I just kept going. I just didn't give up.”

In our newest film, Howardena Pindell reflects on the enduring joy she finds in being an artist.

I'm trying to figure out how I want to use this platform. Talking politics? Amplifying others? Staying up to date with some of the many writers whose work I respect? Learning stuff? Anger? (There's gonna be a shitload of that.) Cat photos? Yeah. I have no idea.

Okay, y’all… I have finally decided that retreat is the better part of valor. Bringing some rainbow energy over to these blue skies.

I left Twitter in 2016. I joined Bluesky in 2024. I think I'm going to settle in for a spell and skeet about food, history, writing, libraries, art, architecture, travel, creativity, and New London, Connecticut. And cats. What kind of childless cat lady would I be if I didn't skeet about my cats?
