Please check out the fundraiser for my amazing neighbors Rick & Micala, who lost everything in a house fire last night. My partner was the one who saw the blaze start & ran ax the alley bellowing for them to get out. It was a terrifying evening. And there's a long road to recovery ❤️

For over a decade I was lucky enough to work side by side with my journalistic role model-turned partner in crime, the truly badass @jordansmith.bsky.social. There's no reporter in the country like her & I miss her terribly. But I'm also so proud & excited for what's to come. #WrongfulConvictionDay

But don’t be a stranger — feel free to drop into my DMs whenever you want. And when I’m here (which, frankly, isn’t all that often; I’ll try to do better, I swear!), I’ll hit you back.

Be kind to yourselves and each other.

There are so, so, many more stories, but no one wants to read a gabillion-part thread, do they? (Callback to my 20+ part thread on the Reed case back in 2018. If you made it through that, you’re a real champ. Talking to you Kim Kardashian.) Nah, no one needs that, so I will sign off for now!

TI also understood my obsession w/forensics, an outgrowth of nearly 30 years of reporting on wrongful convictions (my first such story was published back in 1998, in case you’re building a timeline). Over the years I’ve been able to write about all manner of junk science (we see you, bite marks)
How the Flawed Science of Bite-Mark Analysis Imprisoned a Man for Murder
Forensic dentists who peddled junk science now admit they were wrong. But will their colleagues — and the courts — listen?

Liliana was also the ed behind an investigation I did into a crazy case out of Las Vegas involving a woman named Blaise Lobato. My investigation prompted the Innocence Project to get involved. Lobato was ultimately exonerated & last year awarded millions by a federal jury for her wrongful conviction
How a Rumor Sent a Teen to Prison for Murder in Vegas
Nevada says Kirstin Lobato committed a brutal murder in Vegas when she was 18. But apart from wild rumor, not a shred of evidence connects her to the crime.

When TI was just starting out in 2014, Liliana was my editor & she encouraged me to continue reporting on Rodney Reed, whose death penalty case I had been covering since 2001. The first story I wrote about the case for TI netted the fledgling organization its first award
Is Texas Getting Ready to Kill An Innocent Man?
Rodney Reed is set to die for the rape and murder of a police officer’s fiancee in 1996. But evidence shows the state ignored the cop's own violent past.

Liliana & I launched the pod in 2018, digging into a disturbing wrongful conviction case in GA involving a man named Devonia Inman. Inman was ultimately exonerated. The elected DA said he listened to our podcast as part of the research that led him to dismiss the charges against Inman
Murderville Podcast Episode One: Murder at Taco Bell
A murder in Georgia town sent a man to jail for 20 years. While he awaited trial, three more people were brutally killed. Did police get the wrong man?

Speaking of Glossip, our first collab was writing about his case in 2015. Ppl knew him from the SCOTUS LI case, but few knew about the underlying facts of his conviction until we came along & it was our coverage that helped make Glossip a household name. Ask Joe Berlinger, he’ll back us up on this
Explosive New Evidence Points to Richard Glossip’s Innocence. Why Is Oklahoma Still Trying to Kill Him?
As witnesses came out of the woodwork and an independent report cast grave doubt on the conviction of Richard Glossip, Oklahoma set a new execution date.

Lemme go on a bit more about the amazing
@lilianasegura.bsky.social We've collaborated on so many meaningful investigations — from 2 seasons of the Murderville pod, to 10ys of coverage of Richard Glossip’s case, & beyond! She is one of the most dogged reporters I know. And a truly awesome person.
jordansmith.bsky.social
And I will be forever grateful to @lilianasegura.bsky.social for bringing me to TI and to all the truly AMAZING, talented colleagues I worked w/along the way (special shout-out to incredible editor Andrea Jones!!)

I am proud to have spent the last 11 years w/ TI, doing award-winning — & life-changing — investigations into claims of wrongful conviction & the use (and misuse) of forensic science. My work at TI directly contributed to three exonerations (for a current total of six).

of accessory after-the-fact, which was the initial charge Glossip faced and for which there was evidence -- including Glossip's admission. Drummond has said publicly that Glossip did not murder Barry Van Treese, and yet is charging him w/first-degree murder.

Surreal day in Oklahoma City. Mere months after AG Gentner Drummond won big at SCOTUS—persuading the justices to vacate Richard Glossip’s conviction due to the lies of the state’s star witness—the AG now seeks a 3rd murder trial (despite having no new evidence).
