It’s been a vintage year for the region’s cinema. My only wish is that we stop being cheerleaders for anything Middle Eastern and start viewing our films with a more critical eye.

His palpable opposition to the current ruling regime was courageous and inspiring;his premature retirement heralded the death of politically minded mainstream Egyptian cinema.

I will be writing more about his life and work next month. RIP, Ostaz Daoud.This one’s going to bruise.

To mark the unfortunate occasion, I wrote about some of the worst films by Middle Eastern filmmakers in Hollywood—none of which I would advise even the sanest and bravest among you to watch.
