🗃️ Socialist of the Day: Robin Wonsley is a Minnesota politician and DSA member who has been on the Minneapolis City Council since 2021. Wonsley was born in Chicago and grew up on the South Side. She attended Carleton College and graduated with a B.A. in Women’s and Gender Studies.

In 2021, she became the first Black Democratic Socialist to win a seat on the Minneapolis City Council after she defeated 14 year incumbent Cam Gordon, a member of the MN Green Party. The election also became the first time Minneapolis elected a majority of people of color to the city council.

She joined the Twin Cities chapter of DSA in March 2020. In the summer of 2020, she participated in the George Floyd protests. She also became an organizer in the defund the police movement, an effort to reallocate some community resources towards crime prevention services and programs.

After the 2015 killing of Jamar Clark by police officers in Minneapolis, she became politically active over the next several years, including in the Black Lives Matter movement and Fight for $15 organizing efforts to raise the minimum wage in the city.

Wonsley moved to Minneapolis in 2014 and became the program coordinator for the UofM Women's Center and a board member for Restorative Justice Community Action. She completed a MBA in Nonprofit Management from the University of St. Thomas and began a Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota in 2018.

He completed the primary level of the Montessori Teacher Certification Program in 1983 and the Prekindergarten Teaching Licensure Program in 1986. He taught at Child Garden Montessori School from 1980 to 1984.

Gordon was born in Minneapolis, MN in 1955. He graduated from West High School in 1973. He earned a BS in secondary education from the University of Minnesota College of Education. He then attended the College of St. Catherine, focusing on Montessori education and early childhood development.

He currently chairs the Land Use Committee and is the Vice-chair of Housing and Community Development Committee. One of his main focuses in office has been to increase community land use and begin rent stabilization across Somerville.
