i know plenty of Masters in various engineering fields who go to industry but the basic and practical research that we need to do for public deployment is just not happening. it's not just a pity, it's shameful.

we are way short on EEs, CEs, structural eng, and they will never be paid according to their actual worth under current system

I think that there are many US citizens who are interested/able to do this sort of US PhD path, but they are mainly in MD/PhD programs or in CS PhD programs.

There are also a substantial number of US citizens who will do the pure science PhDs, but not enough for the demand from industry.
