yeah but isn't it kinda silly to type out "on the top-left and bottom-left" when you could just drag a directly-manipulable whisker out of the node? (which could also graphically show where the node was looking?)

FYI, I'm not sure I like the term "effect" here. Once a monad is commutative, it doesn't feel much like it's about effects. E.g. nondeterminism doesn't feel like an effect to me.

I'm thinking more about, like, "fancy values" that you can lift ordinary operations onto.

But that's a minor thought.

Kinda, yeah! If you understand what spreads are and why they're cool – they "value-ify" the List monad – you might wonder whether they can be derived in a systematic way from the List monad. Then other monads might be similarly value-ifiable.

(Admittedly I'm not sure I have other candidates.)

Not sure whether you looked at the typst doc, but I don't think any of this is related

That combines "monads" and "spreadsheets" in a different way, using monads/applicatives/etc. to model how cells access other cells. I'm instead interested in using monads/applicatives/etc. to make spreadsheets with fancy values in cells, like the spreads in Apparatus.
joshuahhh.com
Apparatus does this by replacing lists with "spreads", which remember where they come from. A network of computations typically performed as nested joins with the List monad become a network of un-nested computations with the Spread applicative. Spreads sort of simulate lists, but "valueified".

Apparatus lets you put multiple values in a cell; downstream cells propagate this like the List monad (see joshuahhh.notion.site/spreads-in-a...). But unlike a "do" block, Apparatus makes intermediate expressions independent top-level values! (Which is what you need for spreadsheet-style data-flow.)

Does anyone here know a lot about monads & applicatives & such?

I'm curious about how to make spreadsheet-style data-flows "monadic".

If that sounds interesting please look at my scattered notes at typst.app/project/rnf1... and lmk what's going on.

Quick motivation in thread...

I don't yet have anything insightful to say about distorted tourist maps of cities but I'm very excited by them.
tourist map of San Francisco; the area west of Divisadero St is horizontally contracted by a factor of roughly 4, so it takes up 1/3 of the width of SF rather than 2/3. it looks gnarly and cool. tourist map of Seattle; focus is on downtown region which is depicted roughly accurately, but things get wacky north of that, with vertical and horizontal contractions made to get Volunteer Park and UW into the frame. it looks wacky and intriguing.

Aside from sexism, I think it's also a rhetorical defense of conservatism. "I use data" = "I'm realistic" = "change isn't realistic".

Wow. Where is this from?

Household children are children under age 18 residing in the household of the ATUS respondent. The children may be related to the respondent (such as their own children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews...) or not related (such as foster children or children of roommates or boarders).

today in surprisingly poetic nerd jargon:

"mip" in "mipmap" comes from "multum in parvo", meaning "many things in a small place".
