Activating AXL in mouse cardiomyocytes protected them from cell death and induced dedifferentiation, including structural and metabolic changes similar to those seen in regenerating species.

In 1888, Ramón y Cajal published the description of the cardiomyocyte sarcolemma (the specialized cell membrane of muscle cells) for the first time. However, he received little to no recognition in the international community, as he published this finding only in Spanish journals.
