My most frequent interaction with Proteaceae is eating macadamia nuts! 😛
Here's Macadamia integrifolia. Note how the perianth curls back to reveal the exserted style. The tip of the style scrapes pollen from the anthers as it elongates & presents the pollen to visitors. #Proteaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

A very shiny and wet orange mushroom grows among vibrant green moss and tiny green leaves. The base of its stipe is a thick mucousy white which tapers off about halfway up to the cap into a rough, webby orange. The cap, which is a vibrant orange and is very wet and shiny, is very wide and conical in shape.

Alors que le chou et le pe-tsaï ont été sélectionnés pour un bourgeon terminal unique provocant une prolifération des feuilles, le chou rave et le navet ont été sélectionnés pour leur épaississement de la tige et/ou de la racine.

Surrounded by blurred greens and browns, a roughly textured brown mushroom grows. The mushroom is entirely covered in tiny brown bumps. Theres a white ring of mushroom flesh that sticks out around the upper part of the stipe underneath the cap. The margins of the cap are white, but the rest of the umbrella-shaped cap is the same brown color.

La moutarde brune, utilisée pour fabriquer la moutarde de Dijon, a besoin d'une période de froid hivernal pour fleurir (vernalisation). Pour contourner cette contrainte, des croisements avec le colza, qui ne nécessite pas de vernalisation, ont permis de créer des variétés de moutarde brune pouvant être semées au printemps et adaptées à d'autres types de climat.

Chile is a great place to see some South American representatives of the family. Here is Lomatia hirsuta at Parque Nacional Laguna del Laja. The genus is disjunct in Australia & S. America. This species may be pollinated by ants 🐜 (but more research is needed). #Proteaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

'Stalk-eyed flies' are the masters of cheating off someone else's test.

Lots of bugs have weird, long antler-like projections, but flies in family 'Diopsidae' take the bold choice of putting their eyes on the ends of those projections.

I had seen Embothrium coccineum cultivated in the UK, but in Parque Nacional Alerce Andino, Chile, I saw this beautiful plant in the wild. It is pollinated by birds, incl. hummingbirds & the flycatcher Elaenia albiceps. #pollination #Proteaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

A smaller and one taller mushroom grow next to either in bright green moss. These honey mushrooms as they're called have a golden brown color, rough texture on their stipes and caps, and have a ring of flesh that separate from the stipe near the cap.
