I keep mulling over what the next bird novella will be, maybe the humble house sparrow

Yessssss sometimes just poking around and reading snippets of the research, reminiscing over everything that went into it

Not a mystery per sé, but a mysterious behavior, that of nest parasitism by cuckoos and cowbirds, which I’ve always found extremely fascinating

Maybe it’s because my day job is video editing, but I thrive in the editing/rewrites phase so I’m not as troubled at the prospect, it is nice to have raw material to finally start revising and eventually polishing, but it’s a different mindset from the pure creation of writing the first draft

But also my job is flexible & remote, I’m on call, super busy sometimes and totally quiet other times so I can take advantage of that and sort of hyperfixate and crank through chapters when I have pockets of time. I can usually get 2000 words in a single sitting if I plan the chapter out beforehand~

I follow the Stephen king guide to reading as much as possible, so like audiobooks in the car, audiobooks at the gym, reading on my phone if I’m standing in line, and reading early in the morning and late at night.
And I’m a faster reader on my ereader so I default to that much of the time!

Every time it’s kind of a feeling of loss, like I had such flow and I knew what I was doing, now I’m sort of out to sea without a paddle again, realizing I have to start the process all over again!

But also it feels good. Kind of a relief.

#MurderByMemory is a tongue in cheek Sherlockian (very gay) cozy murder mystery. A novella I started and finished in one sitting.

Pros
Delightful cozy and light
Reminiscent of Christie’s Poirot
Voicey lead

Cons
one-dimensional characters
Thin worldbuilding
Twists feel underdeveloped

#TheCollapsingEmpire by @scalzi.com is a bonafide good ol’ space opera. It’s snarky and yet serious. Expansive and yet always intimate in its conflict.

Pros
High octane fast read
Colorful characters
Unique premise
Those damned nohamapetans!

Cons
Exceedingly ‘soft’ science

#Orbital is a literary scifi, the first of that genre I’ve laid eyes on, a love letter to the international space station and the endeavor of human spaceflight

Pros
Beautiful prose
Breathtaking description
Unparalleled depth of research

Cons
Plotless and a little directionless

#Maelstrom The sequel to the insane book Starfish, never as good as the original but a complex exploration of the end of the world

Pros
Taking the fight to the surface
Subverting ideas of the first book

Cons
Not as haunting or vibey as the first one

#TheMinistryOfTime Story about cultural disconnect of being torn out of your time. I had so much fun with this one, I want a sequel

pros
Realistic depth of character
Complex intricate plotting
Great twists

Cons
The promise of the premise is sort of undermined by the big midpoint twist

One of the best in the grand tour, although it’s more about Saturn and O’Neill cylinders than it is about Titan

Pros
Our favorite characters, Dr Cardenas and Pancho Lane
Political intrigue
Saturns rings! 🪐

Cons
Literally the entire Titan subplot

#BlackSun A complex high fantasy with not a hint of western myth driving it

Pros
Fun cast of unique characters
Deep worldbuilding

Cons
The pacing (mostly flashbacks)
First in a two parter

#ASwimInAPondInTheRain
Exploring the enigma that is the short story, told through the lens of Gogol, Tolstoy, Chekhov, and Turgenev.

Pros
The audiobook is read by famous actors and the author himself
Deep analysis of famous works

Cons
I am not a fan of some of Chekov or Tolstoy’s writing
