“Salvation” as a concept, or theme, or objective, is a central one in Christian faith. All too often, however, it is presented as something that is yet to come – always a promise for later, something to look forward to or hope for, but not today. I think this is a fundamental misreading of how “salvation” is often presented within Biblical stories. People in crisis do not need saving later. People on the edge do not benefit from salvation in an afterlife. Salvation is now. Salvation is immediate. Salvation is today. The world is full all the way around with people who need saving. The world is full all the way around with people in a position to save someone. Salvation need not be some great feat. Salvation can be the simplest thing, the smallest thing. A bit of support at the right moment, a brief encounter, the sort of thing that the savior thinks nothing of in the moment or counts as a minimal effort on their part. The salvation is defined by the one who is saved. If you should find yourself within reach of another who can use some help, who you can see struggling, then please help that person with something you have. Even just the offer of help might be the salvation that person needs. Salvation is not offered or available with strings attached. Salvation is grace – freely offered for the benefit of the person in distress. There’s no expectation or even need for any return favors to one acting as savior. Grace extended – that’s all. If the story of The Christ has any meaning, any value to anyone at all, then it is this: Save those who need saving when you encounter them according to your ability to do so. Do not demand they accept and do not demand gratitude if they accept. Just give what you can to who you can when you can. That’s the whole of the story.
