Emergency ask. It is always so humbling and not in good way to constantly be in financial crisis, especially when I look at all the work that I do. We are at risk of losing our housing and need to come up with 3 months rent by the 1st, which is an impossible ask.

What is an Infernal Salon? It’s a fun, low-stakes writing workshop, high on community, ix-nay on the essure-pray. Each participant is given a prompt from the very spooky deck that C. S. E. Cooney, Carlos Hernandez, and artist Rebecca Huston invented for their TTRPG “Negocios Infernales.”

Join authors C.S.E. Cooney and Carlos Hernandez as they lead an Infernal Creative Salon at 7:30pm EST on 9/17 as a fundraiser for the BIPOC Caucus. Enter a secret underground Zoom room for an hour of imaginative fun.

I decided to add this beautiful quote from Ibi Zoboi's (S)Kin to the top of my decolonial Latinx fantasy syllabus:
“When you’re raised on folklore and fairy tales,
Possibilities are infinite. The lines between
Reality and fantasy are blurred—” Ibi Zoboi

Just saw the Hugo results, and I’m thrilled to see three Indigenous authors being honored! Huge congrats to Moniquill Blackgoose, @littlebadger.bsky.social and Rebecca Roanhorse! I have a detailed reading of Blackgoose’s To Shape a Dragon’s Breath in Dispelling Fantasies!

Please welcome Tasavvur Magazine to Bsky; they're one of South Asia's few dedicated sff magazines, and they do great work. There are barely any eyes on them here at the moment, so if you're interested in global sff (or a desi reader looking for more desi sff), please do read/follow them:

THE BEWITCHING made the Indie Bestseller List. Thank you to everyone who ordered this & to the Indie bookstores that are stocking me. THE BEWITCHING is a tale of supernatural suspense with a heavy dose of Mexican folklore & some New England academia too. www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/760756...
List showing novel in fifth place

Hugs from another 40+ mom! It’s rough and everything hurts, but we’ve got this!

So sad. One of the reasons I write academic books despite not needing to for tenure is to draw attention to authors who can then, hopefully, make enough from their writing to support themselves.

✨TRANSPARENCY TIME✨

Buckle up!

Finally got paid for my IP gig. So, officially, I no longer have trad pub work. So, I'll break down my trad pub career from 2020-2025 ($ before agent fees):

MONEY STUFF:
Wrote 3 books (PB, MG, YA)
The PB and MG were IP.
YA had a $15K advance.
MG had $15K.

1/10

No sympathy needed; I just want to show early-career academics that these things happen, and I am not going to let this ruin my joy that my book is in the world.
jsanchez-taylor.bsky.social
So I spent two years reseaching and writing Dispelling Fantasies to get a bad Amazon review because I spelled a character's name wrong. I feel awful about it; I double checked every author's name and title to avoid errors. But the reality of the situation is I am human.
jsanchez-taylor.bsky.social
Awesome! If the press can’t do a review copy for your course, DM me and I’ll find a way to get you a copy.
