As Helena Rosenblatt explained yesterday at the @jsmillinstitute.bsky.social Summer School, the word 'Liberal' itself was originally a pejorative term created by the catholic church to describe 'ungodly' and secular minded people

That doesn't mean it's not a useful descriptor of a political theory!

On Day 1 Michael Meadowcroft explored the importance of #liberal politics in terms of the past vibrancy of local government. Michael noted that 1948 was the high point of municipal government in Britain, with public authorities owning gas, electricity, housing, airports, schools, and FE provision. 🔶️

Yesterday we reflected on the differences between positive and negative liberty, and the extent to which an excessive focus on the latter has made the public realm nastier, more shabby, with public and private bodies increasingly unresponsive to the needs of citizens. #philosophy #freedom

Day 1 of the Summer School explored the meaning of personal freedom in Liberal and Green philosophies. We heard impassioned calls for a genuinely co-operative economy, more social housing, and stronger local government. Food security also featured in the discussion. Join us for Day 2 later. 🔶️🌿✊️
