A pleasure to review The Sleep Room in today’s Observer.

Psychiatry has come so far since the horrific days of mass ECT & lobotomy, as depicted with devastating effect in @jsthrillers.bsky.social's new biography of Dr William Sargant, their British cheerleader.

The Sleep Room by Jon Stock review – haunting accounts of horrific medical abuse
A book about psychiatrist William Sargant’s unethical treatments at a London hospital in the 1960s is all the more powerful for its vivid patient testimonies

While researching at @wellcomecollection.bsky.social yesterday, I came across, quite by chance, a review in Class War of my first novel, The Riot Act (1997). “All in all, total bollocks. It will probably be on telly by the end of the year.” Adding it to Amazon now!

The Sleep Room, my first non-fiction book, will be published in 2025 by Little, Brown (UK) and by Abrams (US). It foregrounds the brave victims of Dr William Sargant, a brutal 1960s psychiatrist. Looking forward to sharing their remarkable stories - and exposing Sargant’s methods - on @bsky.app.
