I know it’s used. I worked as a reporter in Boston for many years. But I also worked in Portland OR which has a similar but more artful plaza called Pioneer Courthouse Square. It’s called the city’s living room. The contrast is striking.

The Sand Creek Massacre happened on this date (11/29) in 1864. The Third Colorado Cavalry killed and injured 150 to 600 peaceful Cheyenne and Arapaho Native Americans, including Cheyenne Chief One Eye. They were perceived as a threat to white settlers.

The nursery rhyme is based on a true story of a 9 year old girl named Mary Sawyer who nursed a lamb back to health and it followed her to school. This statue in Sterling, MA commemorates her and author Sarah Hale.

The word “shoddy“ stems from the Civil War. Defined as “short wool carded or worn from the inside of cloth, without fibre or tenacity, and with no capability of wear, and yet easily made into the semblance of more durable goods.” The Union uniforms made from it by Brooks Bros fell apart.

President Kennedy was assassinated 62 years ago today. It was so shocking. My parents took us to church that night and it was full even though there were no services. A priest came out and led us in the rosary.
