This has made me remember a visit to the prison museum at Robben Island off Cape Town, where Mandela was held for 18 years. He made efforts to humanise his captors - he’d learn about their families and then make birthday cards for the guards’ kids every year. He played the long game. We must too.

This is like that story that went around a few years ago with a writer complaining loudly down the phone to her mother about being taken to task for misspelling ‘hamster’ on the basis that she’d always spelled it ‘hampster’ and how dare her editor tell her it was wrong.

Literally just read the same and thought: they have some really smart people writing to the editor.
