Former theatre sister. OU history graduate. MA and PhD from C2DH University of Luxembourg. Visual culture of facial trauma in WWI. The medical portrait. History of medicine/surgery. Social history.
In remembrance on the anniversary of the atomic bombing 80 years ago, a picture of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and Park, which I visited in 2013. A very sobering experience indeed, but there is a marvellous upbeat atmosphere in the surrounding city. Friendliness everywhere.

Here is a portrait of a facially-injured French soldier from #WWI drawn by the very skilled artist #RaphaelFreida, born #OTD in 1877. He collaborated with #AlbericPont, a dentist who opened one of the first specialist units for facial trauma in Lyon. 23 of Freida’s portraits of these men survive.

#OTD 1964, my father’s diary entry. I think the reason I get a mention before all the other farm activities is related to my arrival in the small hours…

Here is #AlbericPont operating at his #maxillofacial unit during #WWI. He was also instrumental in the production of a specialist academic publication called La Restauration Maxillo-Faciale which allowed practitioners to share ideas in the management of #facialtrauma.

#AlbericPont also devised an emergency set to wire jaw fractures on the battlefield in an attempt to offset complications arising from delayed treatment (it was often several weeks or months before injured soldiers made it to a specialist #facialtrauma centre). #WWI

Dr Alberti’s Pont, dentist and maxillo-facial surgeon was born #OTD in 1870. He was one of the first specialists to set up a #facialtrauma centre at the outbreak of #WWI in Lyon, where he had been in practice for most of his career.

Oh yum! Couscous is off the menu for me, sadly, even the gluten free stuff doesn’t work, for some reason. On the bright side, I made your Auntie Louie’s corned beef pine for dinner and it was ace. Here’s my husband’s second helping…

Raphael Freida, illustrator. Born 1877, died #OTD in 1942. He created some extraordinary portraits of men with facial trauma for the dental specialist Alberic Pont during #WWI His work is largely forgotten, unfortunately, probably because he saw limited success in his lifetime. He died a pauper.

I visited the American Military Cemetery here in Luxembourg recently (having lived here for 25 years!!) and saw Patton’s grave, which looks out over the graves of the fallen.

Just over 80 years ago, the French illustrator and designer Raphael Freida died of malnutrition and pneumonia on Christmas Day at the Broussais hospital in Paris. I had the privilege of studying his remarkable portraits of facially injured #WWI soldiers for my PhD #histmed
