I’m sure there are mental health downsides to these devices. But never forget they are one of the most powerful weapons citizens have ever had to bear witness to state violence.

Yes you are correct. It is because of their marketplace power that they are vulnerable to government coercion.

This is another reason we must be very very careful about monopolies.

And in my slightly nerdier newsletter take, I suggest that we need to think of Google search more as infrastructure than as a product.

That will let us build the robust marketplace we want on top of its data.
