We're thrilled to see our new meta-analysis on childhood maltreatment and interoception published in Nature Mental Health! 🧠💔

Led by our @juliaditzer.bsky.social, we found that emotional abuse/neglect is linked to lower trust in bodily signals — a risk factor for mental health issues.

As fas as I know (and I also did another quick search), there is unfortunately no research on this topic yet. There’s some on medical trauma in adults, but I haven’t seen any on childhood medical trauma.

Our conclusions:

Emotional abuse and neglect can shape how safe and “at home” we feel in our own bodies.

These forms of trauma deserve more attention — in public discourse, clinical care, and prevention efforts. 🏥🏫💬
juliaditzer.bsky.social
Why does this matter?

Low body trust can interfere with:
- Emotion regulation
- Identifying personal needs
- Processing stress

This may help explain why survivors of emotional trauma are at higher risk for anxiety, depression, or eating disorders. 🙍‍♀️
juliaditzer.bsky.social
Our main finding:

🫀💭 People who experienced emotional abuse or emotional neglect in childhood tend to report lower trust in their bodily signals — a key part of interoception.

One thing that really bothered me about this discussion was the number of speakers who insisted that the gov attacks on US science are "unprecedented". They're not. Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union, Iran, Turkey & more all purged their academy. Surely learning from that history is essential. #EGU25

Five minutes to go and already a very full room here for the final session of #EGU25 , a last-minute debate on “How should the global geoscience community respond to attacks on science”, focussed on the US.

It’s so incredibly sad that this is even necessary. But there is clearly will to act.

Grateful for the insightful discussions during my poster presentation at #SRCD25 on the associations between perinatal depression, anxiety, and child development, focusing on the role of infant physiology.
