I made it to Bluesky!

My name is Julia Baak and I am a #Conservation #Biologist with #Environment and #ClimateChange Canada, based in #Iqaluit, #Nunavut.

I focus on #Arctic #seabird #ecology, specifically monitoring the abundance and distribution of seabirds and #seaducks in the #Canadian Arctic!

New #research on #microplastics in #SpottedSeals from the #BeringSea and #ChukchiSea!🧪

97% of 34 #seals contained #microplastic, compared to 0% of 142 seals from #Nunavut, #Canada.

#Microplastic did not vary by age, location or year, but were ⬆️ in seals that consumed benthic and high trophic #prey

JUST OUT in #STOTEN:

We studied #mercury in #coyotes and other #mammals from #NovaScotia, #Canada.

#THg was ⬆️ in southwest Nova Scotia and in animals at higher #trophic levels, and was surprisingly high in #fishers compared to other regions.

A great presentation from Dr. Oliver Love from the #Integrative #Ecgology #Lab at @uwindsor.bsky.social on #SnowBunting projects in #Iqaluit, #Nunavut last night.

If you’re in town and would like to host a Snow #Bunting #NestBox, reach out to the Love Lab!

So you know how the climate crisis is messing up crop yields?

And how microplastics are now everywhere?

NEW RESEARCH: : microplastics are sabotaging photosynthesis in food crops like wheat in ways that could throw 400 million people into starvation in next 20 yrs.🧪

This‼️

#ECRs: Take photos (and videos) of your #research: your study species, your #fieldwork or #lab setup, you doing your research...

These will be so valuable for #SciComm (presentations, publications, media, etc.)

Take it from a recent PhD grad - I take a lot of photos and I wish I had more!

Big tip for ECR and #PhD students in #ecology: take lots of photos of everything you do in the field/lab. Get others to take photos of you. Lots. Create an image library. You'll be thankful for the rest of your career for their value in communicating your #science, like in this brilliant thread 👇

This #PancakeDay here's our recipe for pancake ice:

🧊 Get some ice forming on the top of your water
🌊 Bump bits of ice together with small waves
♻️ This rounds their edges as they freeze!
🥞 Grow the disc edges with trapped frozen foam

These pancakes will be up to 3m wide + 10m thick.
Bon Appétit 👩‍🍳
The surface of the ocean is frozen, but in a layer of round patches that all tesselate together.
