I haven’t drawn nearly as much as I’d have liked in the last year, but I’m pretty proud of what I did create! Hopefully I can get that spark back soon and get drawing again 💖

ughhh this ended up being saurr long but…. no obligation to read….thinking about hangman and his impact on his bday ✨
ughhh so i was listening to a lot of oasis (live forever will be in my top tracks of stats.fm for a bit) while drawing the recent hangman art and for some reason it made me really reflective and want to write a whole thing so. i guess this is the cancerian in me getting sentimental. i am certainly not the first nor the last person to say that hangman and his work has changed their life, and i feel that speaks to the deep care he has towards his character, his work, and what he's willing to do for his craft for it to be the best that it can possibly be. i think there are a handful of wrestlers like that, and it's such a gift to be able to see that love and commitment grow and deepen over time. i also understand what it means to become disillusioned with something that you loved and trying desperately to bring passion back to it. to watch it slowly dissipate because of things and people outside of your control. i started re-watching wrestling after my dearest and closest friend told me while we were separated by distance i had just started grad school 1400 miles away at the beginning of the pandemic) about the golden lovers and aew, and what it was doing that was so radically different and magnetizing to watch (i stopped watching wwe when i started undergrad because 1. i didn't have time anymore and 2. it felt too disingenuous and sterile that it lost my interest). i actually began watching consistently at the exact beginning of hangman's first reign, but was filled in on the details of his tag teaming, the history with the elite, and how he got to his position of men's world champion in the first place. i can vividly place myself in a campus building watching the series of the good, the bad, and the elite while grading english 101 papers, piecing together the minute details of this cowboy from virginia that i was fascinated by and wanted to know more of. i began to understand him as someone that's always hungry - whether it be for love, or recognition, or something e… at the same time, hangman's reign was waning. he became eclipsed by someone who was a friend but had now revealed himself as cruel and vindictive. he lost his belt. i lost my language. it was may 2022. the sun was burning white and harsh into my apartment. i kept watching. i begged to understand our catastrophes. where was he headed? what was to shape his desires now? who was he to grow into? i kept watching. after defending my thesis the next year, i couldn't look at the work anymore. i still can't, at least not fully. but i remembered a golden lovers poem i had written years ago after watching their budokan hall match and thought maybe i could turn to this. it felt silly and fun, to write about wrestling. a poem or two fell out of me and they were fine. i started to a job somewhere that had nothing to do with what i studied. and every week, i would witness hangman trying to rebuild himself into something tangible post-collapse. then swerve strickland barreled through, all teeth and the fire to get himself what he wanted. a switch in us flickered on. i think hangman has a lot of wrestling soulmates because even when the booking is stacked against him, he uses it as an opportunity to better understand his character. each feud, each interaction all transfigure him into someone with an insurmountable depth. swerve and hangman were both each other's key to unlocking an additional version of each other. i had never wanted to create more badly until then. and it wasn't that the work i was writing was just entirely about hangman and swerve, but it made me more curious to look for everything wrestling-related: books, documentaries, archives, articles, poetry, etc etc. the history and the people that built the sport into what we understand it as today. they weren't just silly little fun poems anymore - they allowed me to understand myself, my body, my familial relations, nation formation, gendered violence, etc within the intimate and choreographed violence of professional … hell's mouth with eyes and arms open without turning back, and am moved by the exultation he brings. how he cried into the grooves of the championship belt that has taken so long to river to his palms and held it up for thousands in an arena as an offering, to say this belongs to us. how we all raised our hands to him, as if in chorus, and called out to him over and over, our tears a reflection of his own. that's the light, that's the champion. so many people feel changed by him and he's still so young. i can't begin to explain what that means, but i hope someday to write something that comes close enough to touch it.
