Yes, I can tell you care about statistics! I’m an epidemiologist and teach about study design. Your skepticism is justified but if there is a problem, it likely isn’t sample size. There could be bias in subject selection (as you point out). Increasing sample size won’t fix it.

Are atheists different in Australia? I would also submit that if they found a significant difference, then the sample size is not the issue. But I also admit I didn’t read the whole paper. There are other papers, however, indicating that atheists commit fewer crimes.
