Informally, seems like it's both ("we're studying radicals"), but I believe more formally it's the symbol (not certain). Here's an example from the IM curriculum:

Math teachers, what do we think of this? Personally I would have advocated for “half or a third times as many,” but I don’t agree numbers can be decreased only by percentages and I’m not super offended by the original wording.
In response to a Washington Post article saying an adult would see “two or three times fewer stars every night than they could as a toddler,” a letter writer claims it is “impossible to see multiple times less of anything. Numbers can be increased by multiples, but they can be decreased only by percentages. One time less of anything is zero. If a toddler sees 1,000 stars but only 500 as an adult, that is a decrease of 50 percent.”

Big day on Wordle for me! I’ve failed to solve 5 in my history, but now that I’ve done 1000, that rounds up to 100% success. 😇
Wordle results - I’ve now played 1000 and solved 995, so it rounds up the decimal to report I’ve solved 100%!
