Book extract reads: I looked up and stared at nothing. An idea was floating just out of reach. A moment later, it hit me like a smack in the face. I ran up the stairs, taking them two and three at a time. In the front bedroom, I emptied Fin’s suitcase onto the bed. I turned over her clothes, raking them apart with my hands. Nothing. I realised anyone outside would be able to see what I was doing. They’d also see I’d lost the towels I’d been wearing on the stairs. I quickly drew the curtains. Fin had hung the dress bag for her bridesmaid’s frock on the front of the wardrobe. I pulled the zip down so hard it jammed. I forced myself to go more slowly. Taking the frock out of the bag, I shook it. The shoes and the headdress of silk flowers fell onto the floor. I didn’t care about them. I carefully turned the dress inside out. I saw a fleck of white caught in a seam. A tiny, downy feather.

The police are using it.’ ‘Really?’ Fin managed to sound suitably startled. ‘Why?’ The first girl looked disappointed. ‘You haven’t heard?’ ‘We’re on holiday,’ Fin apologised. ‘We only arrived this afternoon.’ ‘Someone snatched a baby from a house at the other end of the village.’ The second girl jerked her head, indicating the main road behind us. ‘It’s all right though,’ the third girl said quickly. ‘They’ve found her. She’s back home with her mum and dad.’ The local social networks were impressively quick if they already had that news. How soon would word spread that Fin and I were somehow involved? Other people in Pigeon Lane must have seen the police cars arrive, and the coppers talking to us. They’d have seen the screaming baby being carried out of the cottage. How long before someone shared what we looked like or posted a photo? We’d be instantly recognisable in a place this small.

The back door was locked and the closed window was double-glazed. The monster still spun around as if it had heard her. Dropping onto all fours, it came past the bench on the grass. I could see its face more clearly. Its muzzle was like a dog’s, though its rounded ears looked more like a bear’s. Its nose was more ape-like, though, and so were its broad cheekbones and heavy brow. The hair on its pallid face was barely there. As its dark grey lips drew back in a snarl, I saw viciously sharp teeth. I couldn’t see the colour of its eyes at this distance. ‘Come on, shuck,’ I muttered. ‘Where are you?’ The bear-dog-ape thing turned to the apple trees. It reared up on its hind feet and raked claws like a handful of knives down the closest trunk. Strips of bark torn from great gouges in the sapwood fluttered in the breeze. The monster turned around to stare at the house. It raised those fearsome talons and stepped closer to the other tree. It was challenging me, no doubt about it. A moment later, it started ripping into the second tree’s trunk.

I looked at Fin. She looked at me. Whoever was outside knocked again. ‘Mr Mackmain? Miss Wicken?’ I went to open the door. I did my best to look discouraging. ‘Yes?’ ‘Good morning. I hope I’m not interrupting your breakfast. I just wanted to check you hadn’t been disturbed in the night?’ It was the woman who’d worn the loose shirt, denim skirt and sandals yesterday. She looked a lot more business-like in smart brown trousers and a beige jacket today. She carried a zipped leather bag on one shoulder, held close to her side with her elbow. ‘We’re fine, thanks.’ I didn’t move out of the doorway. She showed me her police warrant card with a pleasant smile. ‘May I come in?’ I wanted to say no, but that wouldn’t be very sensible. I stepped back and opened the door wider. I wondered if one of our temporary neighbours had seen us get into the Toyota and rung the cops to tell them we were trying to leave.

I didn’t want to get into an accident either. My phone rang again though, and a third time. A few minutes later, the phone told me I had a text. And another text. This couldn’t be good. I saw a safe place to stop and pulled over. I turned off the engine and checked my phone. Three missed calls from Eleanor, and two texts saying ‘Call me AT ONCE’. Shit. Had something happened to Fin? Fin and Blanche? Otherwise Blanche would be calling, wouldn’t she, or Iris? Wouldn’t Zan have turned up? My heart was pounding as I returned Eleanor’s call. ‘Hi. What’s—ʼ ‘Daniel, good.’ She spoke over me, crisp and official. ‘What time do you think you’ll be back?’ ‘Some time between seven and eight, depending on the traffic.’ I heard Eleanor repeat that to someone else. At least two people were with her. ‘Tomorrow morning will be fine,’ one of the voices said.

When we paused by the gate to let a group of new arrivals in, she nodded. ‘She’s there.’ We went out through the gate and took the path to the car park. The skin on the back of my neck was crawling. I really hated this.

Book extract reads: With Fin scanning and me packing, we got quickly through the self-checkout. I retraced our route through the retail park’s roundabouts. Back on the main road, I realised we were heading pretty much straight due west. I lowered the windscreen visor to cut the glare when the late-afternoon sun shone through gaps in the clouds. Fin took her sunglasses out of the lightweight backpack she uses instead of a handbag. ‘Where are your shades?’ ‘In the boot, in my hiking backpack with my water bottle and the map.’ If I’d thought about that, I could have got the sunglasses out when we stopped at the superstore. ‘Do you want to pull up somewhere?’ Fin looked ahead for a lay-by or a parking spot. ‘I’ll be okay. Let’s get on.’ The traffic had slowed dramatically, and I wondered why. Then I spotted signs to Stonehenge,and as the road narrowed to a single carriageway, we saw the ancient monument straight ahead through the windscreen.

We recently ate at a restaurant where the server's first question was about allergies or food intolerance, and when I said 'yes, cow's milk', they made very sure everything I was served was tagged

The county archaeologists were worried about treasure hunters prowling the estate with metal detectors and stealing whatever they found. Eleanor and I knew any thieves wouldn’t find more gold, but they’d get a whole lot more than they expected once they met the dryads and the black shuck who lives in those woods. We didn’t need that sort of trouble. As the landowners, the Beauchene family’s share of the hoard’s value would make a useful contribution to the business’s financial reserves in these increasingly tough times. The manor house’s visitor numbers, and what people spend in the cafes, the gift shop and the garden centre, prove the cost of living crisis is nowhere near over. Eleanor would never say so, but I knew she’d be glad to add the cottage in the woods to Blithehurst’s holiday lets as well.

Book extract reads: ‘This is some place.’ He stopped on the gravel to admire the manor. He’s right. Blithehurst’s not huge but it is impressive. The limestone masonry has weathered over the centuries to soft grey or gold, depending on whether or not the sun is shining. The two floors have tall leaded and mullioned windows which look out over ornate gardens at the front, and across the valley to the wooded pastures on the other side of the river at the back. The steep roof has russet tiles which run down to fake battlements along the tops of the walls. Those are purely for show. This house was built to impress, not to be defended in battle. The Roundheads had thought that meant they would easily seize the house from Eleanor’s Royalist, Catholic ancestors in the English Civil War. They were in for a surprise. The dryads got them so thoroughly lost that they never arrived. Not that any of the attackers could know what had really happened.

We carried on stripping fibres from the nettles. We soon had enough for me to plait bundles of three or four into longer lengths. I could have made a much stronger, twisted cord, but I didn’t want to tie anything around these trees that would stay there long enough to damage them. When Fin had finished stripping the last few stalks, I fetched the bucket from the shower room and filled it from the kitchen tap. I grabbed the cleanest-looking tea towel and picked up the tyre iron from the kitchen counter. I gave the tyre iron to Fin as she handed me a last handful of damp nettle strands. We walked down the garden.

His mate with the pickaxe took a couple of steps towards a jewellery seller at the other end of the barn. She was tiny, wearing a long black dress, with purple hair that matched her lipstick and eyeshadow. If she was next on their list, there was nothing I could do. I’d have to take that sledgehammer off the short-arse in front of me, then get past his mate with the mattock. No chance. My mother’s a dryad, but that doesn’t give me superpowers, not really. A dryad’s daughters take after their mothers and live for centuries in the unseen world alongside normal life. I’m tall and strong and hardly ever get ill, but I’ll grow old like my dad. Billhook guy called out. I realised I hadn’t misheard mattock man guarding the door. Whoever these thieves were, they weren’t speaking English between themselves

Since Dan’s still a loner at heart, he and Fin have planned a few days away together afterwards. Just the two of them in a quiet country cottage should be nice and relaxing. Dan should have remembered what folk wisdom says about making plans.

Nowadays, a good many of them work in jobs where they’ll see early signs of something uncanny about to hit the mundane. Hospitals, local government, civilian administration for the police, things like that. They shut trouble down hard and fast. ‘They’d want something major in return for a favour like that.’ Will sounded dubious. I didn’t blame him. The wise women would drive a hard bargain. They had centuries of experience making deals with arcane powers passed down by their foremothers. They’d also learned from the mistakes of people killed by a monster spotting a loophole in an agreement.
